âYouâre like a bad cold.â I sighed and opened the door wider to let Banks in. He was wearing perfectly tight, black ripped jeans that were molded to his body and a graphic T-shirt that had some sort of bandâs name scribbled over it.
âI think that was a compliment,â he said. âYou ready to go?â He stepped inside and looked around the house. âItâs cleaner than last time. Has Rip learned his lesson yet, or did he hire maids?â
âWhy are you here?â Rip grumbled as he stomped down the stairs.
âDid we break up?â Banks looked around the room. âIâm your friend. Friends often stop by other friendsâ houses, especially when taking friends to the movies.â
I frowned. âYou guys are going to the movies?â
âNo, we are.â Banks wrapped an arm around me. âSo, like I said, are you ready?â
âHold up a second.â Rip held out his hands. âWe had plans today.â
âPlans?â Banks frowned. âLike what?â
I wanted to say, âYeah, like what?â since weâd already finished the closet; instead I just watched Rip sweat.
âWe were cleaning out the closetsâ¦â Rip cleared his throat and shared a look with me that said, Donât say a word.
âBut we finished just a few minutes ago,â I pointed out. âAnd the kids are going to be out until dinner.â
Rip suddenly smiled. âYouâre right, Iâll just go get my jacket.â
My jaw dropped. âYou hate the movies.â
âNo, I hate romantic comedies, I donât hate all movies.â
âThis is a romantic comedy.â Banks seemed to be enjoying himself as he looked between us. âBut if you think you can stomach itââ
âIâll be fine,â Rip blurted, and then he eyed me up and down. âWhy donât you change intoââ
âFinish that sentence, see what happens.â I parked my hands on my hips and offered him my fiercest glare because hereâs the thing, I was fully aware that I wasnât wearing a pantsuit like Heather. I owned zero designer earrings or shoes with red bottoms and yes, maybe I was feeling insecure about it, but the point was, heâd almost kissed me. What had happened to him not wanting perfect?
Whatever, we both got caught up in the moment. Nothing more. And the fact was, I wouldnât change my chaos for perfection any day, even if it gave me the sweats along with chest pain, because.
Life.
These kids represented life.
A life that might be messy, and sad, but it was joyful too.
So if I was the one who made Rip shake his head at the chaos of it all, well, good on me.
Good. On. Me.
Rip scowled and held up his hands in innocence. âI was just sayingâ¦â
âGood call on not finishing that sentence. Plus she always looks beautiful, even in head-to-toe black sweats and aâ¦â He pointed at my head. âIs that a bun or a ponytail?â
I groaned. âMaybe I should change.â
Rip let out a snort.
âIâm sorry, did you want to say something?â I crossed my arms.
His face paled. âNothing at all.â
âBe right back, Banks.â I smiled and then shot Rip another glare and stomped up the stairs with him following closely behind.
